Washington Post: Best of 2011
Instead of just letting Washington Post staff dictate what the best trends and topics of 2011 were, the Social team let the readers decide. Matchup polls were seeded in various sections of washingtonpost.com that let readers vote on what they thought were the best/worst issues of the year. The results of the polls were then turned into photo galleries.

To celebrate 11/11/11, The Washington Post created the hashtag #11wordstories that encouraged readers to tell or retell stories in exactly 11 words. The hashtag became a national trending topic and was picked up by other major news media.

Spearheaded the newsroom-wide effort for Washington Post reporters and editors to launch Facebook's Subscribe feature on their individual profiles. The feature enables readers to get even closer to the men and women shaping the news.

Federal workers are one of the most engaged audiences in the Washington D.C. region and The Washington Post tapped into this by creating live chats with reporters and experts. Readers have the opportunity to ask questions on a variety of topics, including federal benefits and potential government shutdowns.
